Meeting with your academic advisor

It’s a good goal to meet with your academic adviser at least once per year. Your adviser can help in the following ways:

Majors and degree planning

If you have any questions about your chosen major or are unsure about the right program for you, your adviser is a good person to consult. They’ll be able to help you think through your options and will know of programs that might work for you.

Registration

As you prepare to register for courses, your adviser can help you figure out the ones you need and what order to take them in. The order that you take your courses in can affect how quickly you get through your degree requirements, which in turn can affect how much money you spend, so this is a great reason to take advantage of your adviser’s expertise.

Managing challenges in courses

If you are struggling in a course, before you decide to make any changes to your schedule, it’s a good idea to check with your adviser. They will understand the implications of changes, since sometimes you can impact your status as a full time or part time student, which can then affect your financial aid. An adviser will be in a good position to help you figure out your options.

So when is the next time you plan to meet with your adviser?
